In order for your body to produce Vitamin D from the sun, you should try to get 15-20 minutes of full sun without sunscreen. For those at high risk of skin cancer, supplements would be a better option. Depending upon the altitude where you live (higher altitude gives you more exposure) and the time of year (winter in North America reduces your exposure), you may have to adjust the amount of time you spend in the sun to produce adequate amounts of Vitamin D.
